How to fit a domestic lift in a regular Cardiff house
Stop thinking about shopping centres and hotels for a start!
Although a home lift performs the same function as a commercial lift, it’s not as big and isn’t designed to accommodate lots of people.
Home lifts give wheelchair users freedom and independence at the push of a button.
A domestic home lift will fit in the corner of a room in most houses
If a stairlift isn’t suitable for your needs you might be looking at your house and wondering where a lift could go. Where the lift can be installed is a common question.
The simplest installation is a through-the-floor home lift and this is often located between a living room and a bedroom. Stiltz home lifts operate through the floor and are electric. Through-the-floor lifts come in a variety of sizes, ranging from small standing models to those capable of accommodating heavy motorised wheelchairs. Using many manufacturers and a range of size options, enables us to select a lift that suits the home and the person. Pollock home lifts offer electric systems too but also hydraulic options, which require a shaft.
A home lift requiring a shaft is often hallway to a garage
A home lift that requires a shaft is usually located in a hallway or where the lift passes through a garage. These lifts can also be installed externally. These types of lifts are hydraulic, making them more robust and suitable for accommodating several people, including wheelchair users and carers. We work with lots of leading manufacturers, including Terry Lifts, whose home lifts are hydraulic.
Working out where to put your domestic lift
There will be structural considerations, based on the location of joists and supporting walls in your property. But you also need to think about the social and physical needs of the people using the lift. If you install it in the wrong part of the house a wheelchair- bound person can be isolated from family-life. Lee says:
“Wherever possible I recommend putting a home lift in a location that keeps the family together. Of course we have to think about practicalities, considering room space and structural suitability but quality of life and independence can be massively impacted if a lift is put in the wrong place.”
We’re fitted lots of home lifts, including a Terry Harmony FE (the biggest lift we work with) in Cardiff.
