Walk-in Bath Questions & Answers
What is a walk-in bath?
A walk-in bath is a type of bathtub that is designed to be easily accessed by people with mobility limitations or disabilities. It typically has a low threshold or door that allows the user to walk directly into the tub, rather than having to step over the side of a traditional bathtub. Many walk-in baths also have features such as grab bars, non-slip surfaces, and built-in seats to make bathing easier and safer for people with mobility issues. Some walk-in baths also have additional features such as whirlpool jets, air jets, and heated surfaces to enhance the bathing experience. Walk-in baths can be a good option for people who have difficulty using a traditional bathtub, or for those who want a safer and more convenient way to bathe.
Quite simply, a walk-in bath is a bath with a watertight door that allows the walk-in bath user to enter and exit the bath without having to step over the side of the bath. For those that have difficulty sitting unaided we’d recommend opting for a seat that helps to lower and lift the user.
How do I use a walk-in bath?
Believe it or not, there is a technique to using a walk-in bath. On the upside, a walk-in bath is much safer to enter and exit than a standard bath, but on the downside, you have to be in the walk-in bath while it fills and empties – we suggest you make the most of this time.
A walk-in bath will have an inward opening door; open this to enter the bath. Depending on the type of walk-in bath you choose, you may have a seat that lowers you slowly into the bath. Once you are sitting comfortably, close the door and turn on the taps.
As the bath is filling, we suggest you start your washing process. This is an excellent time to give your feet a bit of attention; give them a good scrub! Then as the water rises, start washing the rest of your body. When your walk-in bath water level is at the right height, lay back, relax and have a good soak. If you opted for the air spa, turn it on and let the invigorating air jets massage your body.
When you are fully relaxed and ready to get out, open the plug or plugs, and let the water drain away. It would be good to have your towel handy at this point, so you can start to dry yourself as the water level drops. Once the water level has receded below the door threshold, you can open the door and leave your walk-in bath. By this time, you should be dry, refreshed and ready for the rest of your day.
How long does it take to fill a walk-in bath?
The amount of time it takes to fill a walk-in bath depends on several factors, including the size of the bath tub, the water flow rate of the tap or showerhead being used to fill the tub, and the pressure of the water existing cold water supply and hot water system. In general, it can take anywhere from 20 minutes or more to fill a walk-in bath, depending on the specifics of the setup.
To get a more accurate estimate of the time it will take to fill your walk-in bath, you can try filling a bucket with water from the faucet or showerhead that you will be using to fill the tub. Measure the time it takes to fill the bucket to a certain level, and then use that time to estimate how long it will take to fill the tub to the desired level. For example, if it takes 2 minutes to fill a 5-litre bucket with water, it will likely take around 48 minutes to fill a walk-in bath that holds 120 litres of water. If you are looking to replace your existing bath with a walk-in bath, it might be a good idea to time how long it takes to fill your existing bath, as your new walk-in bath will likely be a similar size.
It is difficult to give an exact average water content for baths in the UK, as the amount of water used can vary greatly depending on the size of the bathtub and the preferences of the person using it. However, a typical full-size bathtub in the UK can hold between 80 and 120 liters (21 to 32 gallons) of water, although some larger or deeper tubs may hold more.
Keep in mind that the time it takes to fill a walk-in bath can also be affected by any water flow restrictors that may be installed in the bath tap or showerhead. These devices can reduce the flow rate of water to save energy and water, but they may also increase the time it takes to fill the tub. If you are using a walk-in bath with a whirlpool or air jet system, it may also take longer to fill the tub due to the additional plumbing and equipment that is needed to operate these features.
The time it takes to fill a walk-in bath will depend significantly on your existing cold water supply and hot water system. If you are looking to replace your existing bath with a walk-in bath, it might be a good idea to time how long it takes to fill your existing bath, as your new walk-in bath will likely be a similar size.
In general, it is a good idea to use water efficiently and to be mindful of the amount of water you use when taking a bath. Using less water can help to save resources and reduce your water bill, as well as helping to reduce your carbon footprint.
How much do walk-in baths in the UK cost?
The cost of a walk-in bath in the UK can vary greatly, depending on the size and features of the bath tub, as well as the materials it is made of and the brand or model. Some walk-in baths may cost as little as a few hundred pounds, while others can cost several thousand pounds or more.
In general, walk-in baths with more features and higher-quality materials tend to be more expensive. For example, a walk-in bath with a built-in seat, whirlpool jets, and a heated surface may cost more than a basic walk-in bath with just a low threshold and a non-slip surface. Similarly, a walk-in bath made of acrylic or fiberglass may cost less than one made of cast iron or stone.
It is also worth considering the long-term costs of owning a walk-in bath, including the cost of any necessary repairs or maintenance, as well as the cost of water and energy used to fill and heat the tub. Comparing prices from different retailers and brands can help you find the best value for your money. It is also a good idea to consider any available financing options or discounts that may be available to help make the purchase more affordable.
My existing bath takes an age to fill. Can you speed up the walk-in bath filling time?
Yes, we can. Some homes still have gravity-fed hot water systems – this is when you have water tanks or cisterns in the loft space. We can upgrade your existing open-vented gravity system to an unvented hot water storage system, and along with bigger water pipes, we can improve your new walk-in bath’s pressure and hot water flow rate.
Upgrading an old combi boiler can also improve flow rates and walk-in bath filling times. As a Gas Safe registered company, we can help advise you on this.
Walk-in bath flow rates and water pressure depend on the incoming water supply to your home. Luckily, our homes have decent water pressure in Cardiff and South Wales.
Adaptmyhome are WaterSafe approved plumbers, Gas Safe approved Gas engineers and belong to the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE). So, you know you’ll be getting the best professional advice, installation and service when you buy a walk-in bath from us.
Will I scald myself while sitting in the walk-in bath, and it is filling?
No, we fit special thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs) to all our walk-in baths. TMVs accurately control the water temperature of your walk-in bath taps. They are designed to maintain a water temperature close to 43°C to prevent scalding accidents.
Do I have to wait for a walk-in bath to drain before getting out?
Yes, you do. We can speed up the walk-in bath drain time by installing dual drain plugs and running larger-than-usual drainage pipes.
Can I still shower in a walk-in bath?
Yes, you can. There are two methods:
- If you are able, you can use your walk-in bath as a walk-in shower. A shower can be fitted on the wall for standing up showering. Step into the bath, close the walk-in bath door and shower screen or shower curtains and use the shower as you would in a shower cubicle.
- If you have difficulty standing, we can install a shower mixer tap to the side of bath, within easy reach of your sitting position. If you’re not in the mood for a bath, get comfortable and shower yourself in the sitting position.
Do I have to change my whole bathroom to have a walk-in bath fitted?
No, you don’t. Depending on the type of walk-in bath you select, you can replace your existing bath with a walk-in bath with minimal disruption.
Of course, we can help if you are looking to upgrade your whole bathroom.
Can I replace my bath with a walk-in shower?
Yes, you can. We can either fit a modular shower cubicle especially designed for your showering needs or create a custom-built shower cubicle to meet your specific requirements. Both options can replace your existing bath without the need to replace your whole bathroom.
